Description
During the summer of 1788, King George III's mental health deteriorated. It is thought today that he suffered from a disease called porphyria, which is known to cause neurological problems. Due to his temporary derangement, the king was unable to discharge his duties as monarch, and debate began about whether or not a regent should be elected to rule in his stead. George III regained his faculties soon after, however, and the debate was disbanded until the king's health degenerated completely several decades later. The Regency Act of 1811 formally established the regency of the Prince of Wales, later George IV.
